My Story: Trelease Hartfield, LPC, LCPC, NCC
My life changed in an instant on June 7, 2024. After 22 years of riding my motorcycle without any accidents, one disastrous moment left me in a wheelchair, missing a leg above the knee because I was hit from behind in the HOV lane on I-85. Still, I consider myself one of the lucky ones. Why? Because my helmet spared me from suffering any spinal cord or brain injuries. Yet, not all are as fortunate as me. The person who hit me kept going so he was never found and I have to live like this the rest of my life. Before the injuries, I was enjoying life. I am a veteran of the US Army
Despite the apparent life-saving potential of helmets, many laws in some states only enforce helmet use based on age. This regulation overlooks the undeniable fact that accidents can happen to anyone, irrespective of age.
According to the Governors Highway Safety Association, in states without a universal helmet law, 49% of motorcyclists killed in 2017 were not wearing helmets, compared to 16% in states with a universal helmet law. This statistic demonstrates a clear correlation between universal helmet laws and increased safety for all riders.
By advocating for the enforcement of universal helmet laws, we are not just promoting public safety; we are potentially saving lives, reducing the severity of injuries, and averting countless tragedies every year.
